Does anybody know the legality or have any experience of claiming squatters rights in Ireland? There are a lot of vacant properties around all over the place and if I was stuck in a bedsit somewhere or a crumbling apartment that I owe 250 thou' for, I would be considering my options.

Hey,
I don't know much about squatter's rights per say. However, I have been reading this very interesting article on standing-upon/claiming land.

In actually have a section in it where it goes into squatter's rights. You might find it of some benefit.

Nice one Ash, cheers.
This article is from quite Christian in persceptive, especially by the time you get the notice in it, however the standing and the arguements made in it are totally sound in my opinion. Just because this guy using his understanding from that perscpetive means that the validity of points he is making have less standing. Knowing where you stand, you can say how it is from your perspective.

More research is more likely required. The best thing you can do is find out for yourself rather than rely on others.

Thats what I have found anyway.
Good luck :)
Just found this.. http://www.dfpni.gov.uk/adverse-possession
I found this but they mainly speak of Adverse Possession? Seem its a fancy word for squatting

This is it http://rcmck.com/litigation-publications/the-doctrine-of-adverse-po...
It prob has its own legal definition in the legal dictionary.
It can be looked up in Black's Law dictionary here
Stay somewhere for 12 years and be able to prove it and you'll own that land/property! Ive seen mobile homes on land around the country and thats their gig. Waiting to claim it. Send yourself some letters immediately or get hooked up to some services.
The law regarding squatters rights was repeled years ago, im afraid if you want to own a property you have to go and earn money save up and buy it, with regards to the mobile homes dotted around thats just people trying to get past planning regulations, but depending on where you are that tatic long longer works as most councils around ireland have channged there planning regulations to avoid this.

No law ever passed repealing squatters rights in Ireland. Planning regulations are made centrally and not by individual councils.
Thank you Mary.
